Treatment consists of a series of gentle passes of intense light over the treatment area. The light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the dilated vessels or pigmentation. The heat associated with this light gradually diminishes the vessels or the pigmented lesion.
Four to six treatments are usually required to obtain the desired results with a three to four week interval between treatments. The treatment time varies between 15-45 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated.
The treated area is cleansed and a cold compress and cool gel is applied. When the treatment starts and the pulses of light are delivered, a sense of the snapping of a rubber band is felt. Pain is minimal and requires no topical anesthetic - however one can be used for maximum comfort. After the treatment, sunscreen is applied and you can resume normal life activities immediately.
Side effects are minimal. Immediately after the treatment the skin will appear flushed, the brown pigmented spots will appear darker and will continue to become darker until they flake off in a week or two. Capillaries might become more visible for a few days before they disappear. In rare cases temporary swelling or blistering may occur.
